Euan is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie post-doctoral research fellow at the Centre de RMN à Très Hauts Champs de Lyon.
He is originally from Cornwall, the extreme western tip of the United Kingdom. He received his PhD (2022) at the University of Cambridge under the supervision of Prof. Dame Clare Grey on the characterization of sodium-ion battery cathodes using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, alongside ab initio calculations. Having spent eight years at the University of Cambridge, he relocated to the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) to practice driving on the other side of the road (something frowned upon in the UK) and, more importantly, to experience the vibrant and exciting research atmosphere on which the University (and he) thrives. At UCSB, Euan worked alongside Professors Raphaële Clément and Anton Van der Ven. He developed novel experimental and computational methods for the characterisation of high-capacity cathode materials for Li- and Na-ion batteries. His present research focuses on the development of novel (adiabatic) pulses and pulse sequences for acquiring nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of strongly paramagnetic materials, and devising new methods to fit, assign and understand paramagnetic NMR spectra.
When not doing science, Euan enjoys cooking,* reading,** and walking***
If you would like to get in touch with Euan, he can be found BlueSky (@euannbassey.bsky.social) and Github (EuanNBassey). You can also email if you prefer email, or carrier pigeon and smoke signals if you really want his attention****
*He makes a mean lasagna. Here, of course, mean is meant in the sense of “average”
** Not to be confused with the city. Euan has nothing against Reading, but still finds the lack of consistency between British placename and verb pronunciations curious
